The island is compact but hilly, the bus serves only some beaches and rentals are arranged by phone. Here is what the village and Visit Okinawa Japan say about buses, taxis, bicycles, scooters and cars.

In brief
At 15 square kilometers, Tokashiki is small, and Visit Okinawa Japan says its transportation options and compact size let a visitor spend the morning at one beach and the afternoon at another.6,7
That sets the shape of a visit. The port is on the north side and Aharen is in the south, and Tokashiku sits on the west coast between them, as the map on this site shows. The village says some buses go to Aharen beach, but none go to Tokashiku beach.1 Everything else on the island is reached by taxi, rental or a pick-up.
Visit Okinawa Japan also says that on its more remote islands taxi availability is limited and bus availability varies by location.8,9 That is the key to planning: do not count on a taxi appearing when the boat arrives. Arrange the transfer first and the beach second.

Taxi and bus availability varies on remote islands, so confirm times with the ticket office.9
The village publishes the island bus schedule in two seasonal versions: summer from March to October and winter from November to February.12 It warns that the bus schedule changes with the ferry sailing status, so the ticket office is the place to confirm times.13 Visit Okinawa Japan says Aharen Beach is accessible from Tokashiki Port by taxi or local bus in less than 15 minutes.2
The bus is a good fit for a day-tripper who wants Aharen Beach and the bars and cafes within easy walking distance.2 It is a poor fit for Tokashiku, where the village says no buses go.1 If you cross on your own, ask for the printed schedule at the ticket office in Naha or at the port.
On a packaged day you will not need the bus. Our listing says a private shuttle takes guests from the port to the beach, no walk is needed and local transfers on the island are included. A reviewer says the buses were already waiting after the boat arrived, and the staff on the island were fantastic.
On the ferry
These one-way figures are Tokashiki village's own, in yen as it states them; round-trip fares are 660, 1,300 and 2,060 yen.4
For Tokashiku Beach the village names these routes: a taxi, a rented car or motorcycle, and a pick-up arranged by a marine service shop in the Tokashiku area.11 The pick-up is the neatest if you have already booked snorkeling there, and the operator can say more at the time of booking.11 The meet-on-Tokashiki turtle tour on another listing runs a yellow shuttle bus from the port that leaves about 10 minutes after the ferry arrives.
Taxi advice from Visit Okinawa Japan is to confirm in advance, as availability is limited on remote islands.8 That means a phone call from Naha, or a request at your guesthouse, rather than a hope at the pier. The bureau also says the taxi ride from the port to Aharen is under 15 minutes.2
If the weather moves the island-side port, plan for flexibility. Departure and arrival times can change with local events or sea conditions, and the village says the island-side port may change.17 A taxi booked for a specific minute is a risk on those days, and a shuttle tied to the ferry arrival is a better bet.

Rental by phone
Reach the whole island
Visit Okinawa Japan suggests renting a car, scooter or bicycle if you plan to explore the island's more remote beaches.14 A Tokashiki Island electric bike rental is a detail to confirm by phone. On the island-wide level it says many bicycle rental services in Okinawa offer motor-assisted options in addition to conventional bicycles.18 The sources we could verify do not name a Tokashiki shop for electric bikes, so ask by phone before you count on one.
For comparison, the bureau recommends renting a car or electric bike to get around Zamami's hilly terrain.20 Tokashiki is the bigger island at 15 square kilometers, with a mountainous interior and a road between the port and Aharen.6,21 A motor-assisted bike is the sensible choice if you would rather not climb in the summer heat.
You can also bring your own bicycle. The ferry carries a bicycle for 330 yen one-way and 660 yen round-trip.4 That is cheap, but you must manage it on the crowded summer boats, and the village asks passengers to arrive 1 hour before the ferry sails.4,22 Hiring on the island is simpler than carrying one aboard.

Morning
The ride takes under 15 minutes by taxi or local bus.2

17:30
The last boat of the summer timetable leaves Tokashiki at 17:30.10
For Tokashiki Island car rental, the village points visitors to its brochures for the car and motorcycle rental phone numbers.3 Its English brochure, Tokashiki Village MAP / Information, is the document to download before you book.3 Visit Okinawa Japan also suggests renting a car, scooter or bicycle to explore.14
Taking a vehicle from Naha is a separate matter. Vehicles and cargo need a reservation by phone, passengers must be at the port 1 hour before departure and payment for vehicle and cargo is cash only in yen.15 A motorcycle up to 125cc costs 650 yen one-way and 1,300 yen round-trip on the ferry, and a larger motorcycle costs 1,030 yen and 2,060 yen.4
Remember the practical limits. The village says there is no free car parking for passengers at Naha Tomari Port, and it takes 10 minutes on foot from the Tomarin parking lot to the North Ferry Terminal.23 For a single day on the island, renting there or taking a taxi is far simpler than shipping a car.

The island's transportation options and relatively compact size means you can spend the morning at one beach and then the afternoon at another.
Before you travel
Cash makes every option here easier. The village says there is no ATM near Aharen beach and advises taking enough cash.5 The ATM on the island is at the post office, open 8:45-17:30 Monday to Friday and 9:00-17:00 on Saturday, closed on Sunday and public holidays.19 Naha Tomari Port has an ATM and an exchange machine in the Lawson convenience store.24
Book what you can before the boat. Reserve the crossing online, as the village warns that the ferries become very crowded in Golden Week and from June to October.25,26 Phone the Naha branch for a vehicle or for a group of more than 15, since those cannot be booked online.27 Ask your rental shop whether it takes cards.
To continue to Zamami or Aka from Aharen, the village says a small on-demand boat called Ferry Mitsushima runs from Aharen Fishing Port and must be reserved at least 1 day in advance.28 That is a second ferry system with its own rules, and it is not a quick hop to improvise on the day.
The beach hopper takes the Marine Liner at 9:00, reaches Tokashiki at 9:40 and goes straight by bus or taxi to Aharen.10,2 After a morning at Aharen, a taxi or pick-up carries the hopper to Tokashiku for the afternoon, and the last Marine Liner home leaves Tokashiki at 17:30 in summer.11,10 This plan needs a phone call to a taxi in advance.
The base camper sleeps on the island and rents a bicycle or scooter for the remote beaches around Aharen Cape.29,14 Tatazumi lists a free shuttle from Tokashiki Port and Aharen Beach as a 1-minute walk away.16,30 The stay page on this site compares the other places to sleep.
Our package is the third way. The crossing, the island shuttles and lunch are included from $62, so the only decision on the day is how long to stay in the water. It does not include rentals or a stay, so compare it with the other two plans above.
